Project description

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is the intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for local and national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.The "flagship" of the Convention is the List of Wetlands of International Importance (the "Ramsar List"). To date, the 164 Contracting Parties to the Convention (countries) have designated 2’087 wetlands as "Ramsar Sites", covering almost 205 million hectares, and the List continues to grow steadily.

The Ramsar Secretariat, responsible for the day-to-day coordination and operations of the Convention, maintains the Ramsar List and is the custodian of the official Ramsar Sites archive, which comprises Ramsar Information Sheets (RIS), maps, GIS boundaries of the site and any supplementary information on Ramsar Sites, together with the periodic updates to these, which are provided by Contracting Parties in both electronic and hard-copy formats.The Ramsar Sites Information Service (RSIS) provides online access to data and information on all designated Ramsar Sites.
