UNEP/Grid Geneva and BGR´s sector project "Extractives and Development" co-host workshop on “Sand and Gravel Governance Failures and Successes around the World”.

Date: Jul. 14 2021

Public policy is an important lever for a just transition to responsible sand sourcing and management. Given the variety and distribution of sand resources - and the largely domestic and often informal nature of these resource flows - each region and nation has its specific policy needs however. UNEP/GRID-Geneva and the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) co-hosted an interactive virtual workshop on 9 July 2021 that brought scientists, NGOs and governmental agencies together to discuss failures and success of sand and gravel governance around the world. Participants compared their place-based research cases, identifying similarities and differences that are important to consider in shaping workable principles to guide appropriate regional actions in future. The workshop results will be used and extended in a second workshop due to be held in Fall 2021 and documented in a scientific paper.
