Our dear colleague Karin Allenbach, Remote Sensing Officer at GRID-Geneva, passed away on Thursday 5 September 2024 at the age of 47.
After completing her studies in earth sciences and the Complementary Certificate in Geomatics at the University of Geneva, Karin was hired by GRID-Geneva in 2004 to work on environmental observation activities using satellite images. In particular, she contributed to the Iraq Marshlands Observation System (IMOS), the development of high-resolution land cover mapping in the Geneva region, and knowledge transfer activities in the Caucasus region. Over the years, numerous ecosystem analysis projects have benefited from Karin's scientific and technical skills, but also from her great human qualities, which are so important in teamwork.
In parallel to her project activities, since 2017 she has been the much-appreciated responsible of the remote sensing course in the Complementary Certificate in Geomatics at the University of Geneva.
Everyone who worked with Karin will remember her as a joyful, radiant, positive and dedicated person. She was at the heart of GRID-Geneva's spirit of sharing, especially through the organisation of social events for our team.
It was with great emotion and sadness that we received the news of her death after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Beyond this sad moment, we will remember the smile and kindness that enlightened us for twenty years.
