Citizen science for a cleaner French coastline!

Date: Oct. 28 2025

As part of a collaboration between UNEP/GRID-Geneva, Plan Bleu, and Wings of the Ocean, a citizen science prototype was developed using the MapX mapping application to visualize and analyze marine litter collection data along the entire French coastline.

This prototype includes:

  • An interactive map showing the spatial distribution of collected waste by type and area.

  • A heat map showing the quantities of waste collected per person per hour.

  • Dynamic graphs comparing types, volumes, and weights of waste across regions and environmental contexts.

  • A story map entitled "Citizen Science to Reduce Marine Waste: Insights from Wings of the Ocean"

This initiative illustrates the potential of citizen data for environmental monitoring, awareness-raising, and decision-making, while contributing to the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD). It offers great prospects for the potential implementation of automated data flows between waste collection in the field and their visualization in an online mapping application.
