Interfacing of FAO SEPAL, UNEP-DHI HDSS and MapX tools in the Congo Peatlands project

Date: Nov. 6 2025

The IKI funded Congo Basin Peatlands project aims at securing crucial biodiversity, carbon and water stores in the Congo Basin Peatlands by enabling evidence-based decision making and good governance.

In the context of this project, the FAO uses the SEPAL tool to access, process and analyze data for land monitoring, while UNEP-DHI has set up a Hydrological Decision Support System (HDSS) for the Lac Tele-Lac Tumba landscape. GRID-Geneva, through the MapX online platform, established a mechanism to automatically interface SEPAL and MapX as well as HDSS and MapX, so that data produce through the FAO SEPAL tool or the UNEP-DHI HDSS tool can automatically be displayed in the MapX dedicated project platform. This will allow to not only visualize new data created through other tools in the project, but to also generate new knowledge based on this data through added-value products such as storymaps.

More information on the use of these new interfacing features is available for HDSS and SEPAL.
