We are pleased to share that our new research article, “Integrating Remote Sensing, GIS, and Citizen Science to Map Illegal Waste Dumping Susceptibility in Dakar, Senegal,” has just been published.
This study brings together satellite data, spatial analysis, and citizen-generated insights to better understand where illegal waste dumping is most likely to occur across Dakar. Our findings highlight critical hotspots (particularly around Mbeubeuss and densely populated areas of Keur Massar) while also demonstrating how combining environmental indicators with social perception can strengthen waste monitoring and support targeted interventions.
This work was made possible through an inspiring collaboration between UNEP/GRID-Geneva, the University of Geneva, the Université Amadou Mahtar Mbow (UAM) in Dakar, and the Société Nationale de Gestion Intégrée des Déchets (SONAGED) in Dakar. Grateful to all colleagues and partners involved.
Looking forward to seeing how these results can support more sustainable and data-driven waste management strategies in Senegal.
