UNEP/GRID-Geneva is proud to announce the launch of the 3rd Sand and Sustainability report, which will take place on May 13th 2026 3pm at the UN Palais des Nations in Geneva.
This report alerts on the fact that weak governance and over-extraction of sand are already degrading rivers, coastal, freshwater and marine ecosystems, with rising environmental, social and economic impacts. This calls for prompt international cooperation to securing the services provided by sand, as well as a more strategic approach for managing this essential resource for both nature and development, before environmental damage and scarcity intensify.
