Project description

This project contributes to UN Environment Programme of Work Subprogramme 7 Environment under review, (iii) Strengthening of the science policy interface by countries based on the use of data, information and policy analysis in the areas of air quality, water quality, ecosystems, biodiversity, waste and hazardous chemicals, the marine environment and emerging issues. The “IAEGs Monitor” aims at establishing the capacity of the UN Environment Programme World Environment Situation Room to monitor IAEGs, in particular Global Environment Goals (GEGs), in a coherent and user-friendly manner. The “IAEGs Monitor” aims to provide easy-to-use and up-to-date statistical and geospatial information on the progress towards environmental goals, through an integrated platform that would also give access to related knowledge and legal documents. Beyond official GEGs and SDGs indicators (for which some dedicated already platforms exist), it proposes other indicators of interest for environmental assessments (such as the Global Environment Outlook reports). The “IAEGs Monitor” aims to help policy makers to keep track of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) memberships and related goals, to quantify the environmental states and trends of territories and to interpret the figures in terms of benchmarking and progress. Ultimately, the “IAEGs Monitor” should be of practical use in international policy arenas.
The “IAEGs Monitor” will incorporate elements of MapX, which is the geospatial component of the World Environment Situation Room.
