Project description

Monalisa is a EU-funded project that aims at preventing and reversing Land Degradation and Desertification (LDD) across Mediterranean drylands. It will be carried out in 6 Mediterranean Case Studies – Los Pedroches, Spain; Médenine, Tunisia; Berchidda-Monti, Italy; Alta Murgia Park, Italy; Asterousia, Greece; and Beit Dajan, Palestine.

The project aims to provide a methodological framework to assess and monitor LDD risk while enhancing soil productivity across diverse land uses, including agriculture and agroforestry. To this end, a Decision Support System (DSS) will be created, that is a multi-modular, practice-oriented system composed of web-based applications that include four specialized modules, each focused on key agricultural practices: improving fertilization with organic fertilizers, managing irrigation and water harvesting, innovative grazing systems, and restoring natural habitats like grasslands. This tool will help farmers and policymakers make informed decisions to combat land degradation and desertification (LDD).

GRID-Geneva will contributes to several work packages through its knowledge in digital data and free and open-source software (e.g. data cubes), to ensure transparency and reproducibility for scientific purposes.
