Description

When the reservoir behind it has filled, the immense Three Gorges Dam will hold back water to a depth of 175 m and a length of 600 km. Nearly 2 million people have been displaced and many archaeological and cultural sites have been lost. Some scientists fear that the salinity of the sea of Japan will be a¤ected. On the other hand, the dam replaces highly polluting coal-fired power stations. It will meet one-ninth of the country’s electricity needs and put an end to the recurring floods of the Yangtze river.
