GRID-Geneva manages numerous high quality geospatial data sets at various scales (global, continental, national and subnational) on a variety of environment related themes. These GRID-Geneva managed platforms are available in the first section here below.
GRID-Geneva also promotes the use of other relevant data platforms that can be found in another "External Data Platforms" section at the bottom of this page.
Search via our dedicated platforms
Global Infrastructure Risk Model and Resilience Index (GIRI)
The Global Infrastructure Risk Model and Resilience Index (GIRI) is the first publicly available, fully probabilistic risk model to estimate risk for infrastructure assets with respect to most major geological and climate-related hazards.
Interactive Country Fiches
The Interactive Country Fiches provide a system of interactive and updatable environmental profiles for the analysis of environmental situations and performances of countries around the world. Covering eight environmental pillars, this online tool aims to provide information on key national policies and actions, and offers a single-entry point to over a hundred of up-to-date datasets.
Data Analytics and Early Warning for Environment
The Data Analytics and Early Warning for Environment platform provides the latest data for a selection and indicators, and gives access to specific thematic platforms: live Earth, disaster risk, ecosystems for risk reduction, environmental hotspots, planetary boundaries, loss & damage, climate change.
Environmental hotspots
The Environmental hotspots platform allows quick comparison of satellite images of different times and under different spectral bands, for different hotspots.
Climate change
The climate change data platform contains up-to-date relevant information about climate change indicators
Opportunity mapping
This platform is dedicated to the “Opportunity mapping” approach, which aims at combining global datasets on ecosystem distribution and hazard exposure to highlights areas where ecosystem restoration and/or protection can be used to protect the greatest number of people globally.
MapX
This platform is an open source cloud solution for mapping and monitoring the sustainable use of natural resources
Cartagena convention
This regional environment monitoring platform facilitates the compilation of information from national monitoring and assessment programmes to make environmental information generated in the Wider Caribbean Region (WCR) more accessible to stakeholders for national and regional decision-making.
Ramsar
The Ramsar Sites Information Service (RSIS) provides online information on wetlands that have been designated as internationally important.
Marine Sand Watch
This platform monitors large vessels dredging sand in the marine environment all around the world using the “automatic identification system (AIS)” emitted by dredging vessels, which provides identifying information and their real time position.
The dredging vessels are identified by the characteristic way they move over time allowing us to quantify activities such as dredging, dumping, transiting and discharging material to shore.
WESR-RISK
The WESR-RISK Data Platform is a multiple agencies effort to share spatial data information on global risk from natural hazards. Users can visualise, download or extract data on past hazardous events, human & economical hazard exposure and risk from natural hazards.
Live Environment Monitoring
GRID-Geneva develops and maintains several live graphs linked to environmental issues. These graphs can be downloaded as images, pdf or vector files, and their data accessed as .csv or .xls files.
Caucasus GeoNode
GRID-Geneva maintains a GeoNode platform containing Caucasus specific data collected through the SCAC project. The geospatial layers can be downloaded from the portal or used through web services.
GRID core datasets
This platform includes a selected set of basic fundamental geospatial data held by Grid-Geneva, and collected from external sources
WESR
The World Environment Situation Room (WESR) is UNEP’s dynamic on-line platform for sharing contextualized data and knowledge to keep the environment under review.
External Data Platforms
GEOSS Portal
The Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) Portal offers a single Internet access point to Earth observation data, information and knowledge from all over the world for users with different backgrounds and from different disciplines. It has been developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and coordinated by the Group on Earth Observations (GEO). More information at: http://www.earthobservations.org/gci.php.
WRI Data platform
The World Resources Institute (WRI) proposes a suite of data platforms that enable users to monitor forests with satellites, track the drivers of climate change, understand indigenous communities land rights, plan for water scarcity, examine the cross-section of global environmental issues and more.
Calculating individual carbon footprint for Geneva inhabitants
GRID-Geneva was mandated by the Geneva Canton, the Geneva city and 2050today to adapt and host the first cantonal carbon calculator developed by l'ADEME (Agence de la transition écologique). This individual calculator allows to better understand the impacts of our actions in various domains (transport, food, heating, electricity, shopping, etc.). Once the result given, a dedicated personalized action section propose actions that could be done to lower the user carbon footprint.
