Description

Every year, 200,000 km2 of
soils are lost for agriculture
The difference between DESERTS and DESERTIFICATION
Deserts are natural ecosystems, beautiful in their own right, and
should not be confused with desertification, which is a rapid
process that follows environmental degradation, turning
hospitable areas into a no-man's land.
The satellite images accompanying this article show several
examples of drastic environmental changes caused by
unsustainable practice and / or climate change.
The extent and rapidity of change caused by human activities
is impressive. Although not easily noticeable on a day-to-day
basis, comparison between two images taken only a few
years or decades apart reveal the dramatic change that
desertification can cause over a short period of time.
This should inspire us to respond more forcefully to such
human and environmental tragedies.
