Description

Styx Valley includes old-growth Eucalypts—the world’s tallest
hardwood (Eucalyptus sp.) trees. These giants are threatened by dramatic
deforestation occurring in Tasmania. Currently an equivalent area of
about 40 football fields is being destroyed every day on this island.
Over 90% of logs taken from these forests, among the oldest on earth,
are grinded to produce paper. Since 1997, 140,000 ha of native
forests have been converted to plantations. In infra-red satellite
images: photosynthetic activity (i.e. forests) appears red.
