Description

Gold mining is one of the world most polluting industries.
The production of a single wedding ring generates 18 tons of
wastes. This pair of satellite images shows a silver and gold open
pit mine in Papua New Guinea. After the waste dam rupture,
200,000 tons of mining waste are dumped every day directly
in the river. The release of large amount of sediments disturbs
watercourses and contained metals are poisoning aquatic life.
