Gulf of Fonseca (Honduras)

Description

Honduras is a major producer of cultured shrimp. In the Gulf of Fonseca the aquaculture industry has rapidly replaced the mangrove forest destroying the habitat of local fauna and flora in the process. Fisherman complain that not only were the mangroves important spawning grounds for fish, but the shrimp ponds make access to the sea more di‹cult for their boats. The aquaculture industry has thus caused environmental and social problems.
