Lake Victoria (Uganda)

Description

Shared by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, Lake Victoria is the second largest freshwater lake in the world. In the 1990s, an infestation of the artificially introduced water hyacinth became so pervasive that lake transport and the fishery were seriously disrupted. The invasion also created an ideal habitat for disease-carrying mosquitoes. A major programme to control the water hyacinth by using insect predators was implemented which seems to have slowed its advance.
