Description

In 1975, the region was still relatively pristine, but the development
of the Cuiaba - Port Velho highway became a major transportation
route for immigrant farmers seeking income-producing
opportunities. Migration into the area continues unabated.
By 2001, the distinctive fishbone pattern of forest
exploitation had expanded dramatically.
In 2004 in Brazil, 10,000 km2 of forest have been converted into
fields, mostly to produce soybean that is then exported e.g.
to Europe as livestock fodder. 1/5 of the Amazonian forest has
already been lost while, in the meantime, Europe
is accumulating meat overstocks.
