UNEP/GRID-Geneva developed a new platform to monitor large vessels dredging sand in the marine environment. It partnered with Global Fishing Watch for data provision, and was funded by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection.
The platform reveals that between 4 and 8 billon tons of sand and other sediments are moved or extracted from the world's oceans.
This the first public platform for monitoring marine the dredging activities.
