GRID-Geneva contribution to the Minamata CoP in Geneva

Date: Sep. 29 2017
During a knowledge lab session in the margins of the first Minamata Convention of the Parties, UN Environment joined the Artisanal Gold Council and UNITAR to present an integrated package of tools to support data collection, information management, analysis and reporting linked to the National Action Plans for the artisanal and small scale gold mining sector. UN Environment presented a dedicated application of the geospatial MapX platform that has been developed by GRID-Geneva. MapX features rich analysis and visualisation functionalities such as customised dashboards and story maps. Key indicators to map and monitor include data related to gold production, mercury consumption, occurence of the four worst practices and the presence of vulnerable populations. In this way, MapX can help inform policy making, enable data sharing and monitor the impact of mitigating interventions. The platform is available for global rollout and implementing countries are invited to contact UN Environment for further information: www.mapx.org/action
