Description

The population of the Canton of Geneva grew by 30 % between 1973 and 2003 (107,500 people to 434,400). The rate of growth is accelerating (+3% between 1985 and 1990 and +7.3 % between 1998 and 2003). These images demonstrate the strong attraction of Geneva, but also the changes which follow for the whole region. Following saturation of the Pays de Gex-Geneva-Anemasse axis, urban expansion is turning towards the Geneva-St Julien-Archamps corridor. Swiss and French authorities are faced with a challenge: to coordinate their e¤orts to combat uncontrolled development in order to maintain the quality of life and of the environment in the region.
